Creating a Perfect Cabin for your Business

In part two of our remote workspace blog we are moving out to the garden. Many of us are now pressed for space within our homes and are starting to look at ways of utilising our gardens. Often this can be a great solution for people who need to be able to compartmentalise their work/life balance. For people with young children, who also need to work from home, the cabin is a dream option. It is also perfect if you struggle to shut off from work at the end of the day, as it leaves a physical boundary, which many people find important for their mental health.

Garden Oasis

A garden workspace is an incredible way to change up your way of working. Not only can a cabin in the garden give you the space that you need but it can also offer a chance to ‘get away’ from the daily noise and bustle of your home, making you more productive and also able to switch off at the end of the day.

We know first-hand the benefits of a garden workspace and have created our perfect office at home, the added bonus is that it is only a 30 second commute with free parking!

Whilst we use our cabin as a traditional home working space it could also be repurposed for many other multi-functional uses. They are perfect for workout areas, hairdressing, beauty rooms, therapy rooms – the added benefit is that external people can visit your home without going inside the main house and therefore maintaining privacy – and the need to always have a perfect home!

Hairdressing and Beauty Space

We have recently been asked commissioned by Nicky Mckenzie to design a cabin for her successful hairdressing business https://www.hairbynickymckenzie.co.uk/. Our initial layout plans can be seen here.

Space has been allowed for a hairwashing sink, cutting stations, a relaxation area and storage. It will all be pulled together with soft furnishings and perfectly proportioned furniture.

It is a compact space but we love the challenge of incorporating all the practical elements needed for this type of business into a restful and sophisticated space, where Nicky’s customers can come to relax and she can easily access everything she needs.

Yoga and Pilates Workout Space Some people have realised the benefits of the Cabin for a number of years. We spoke to Hannah Epps, owner of Farnham Pilates www.pilatescommunity.co.uk, about how her Cabin has helped her business since she built it five years ago.

Hannah’s cabin is regularly used for running her Pilates workshops. It has freed up space from within the main residence and meant that there is no requirement to hire alternative spaces. In the long term this makes for a very cost-effective project. The addition has also enabled Hannah’s business to continue over this difficult time. “I’m sure many small businesses have had to respond and learn very quickly in order to keep their clients. Many fitness professional colleagues have had to clear out sitting rooms, play rooms and even bedrooms.” She continues, “Luckily we built our wooden home garden studio 5 years ago, for my Pilates and 1.1 equipment classes. So, I was able to easily move all my classes to online videoing in the studio.”

Wellbeing Office Space

This is something that we care passionately about throughout the home, but at the moment the work/life balance has never been more important. If you are managing to live in a calm, clutter free, space whilst working it helps you become more productive and enables you to maintain a better balance in your life as a whole. Find your area within your home and make it yours.

It is also key to make sure that your space is comfortable. So many of us are working at our kitchen islands or at the dining table and, over time, this can become an issue for our physical wellbeing. It is really important to think about how we are using our space and that we are being kind to our bodies. We have been following the youtube videos by Ergo at Work, who specialise in ensuring staff are comfortable and fit whilst working in their homes. We found this video on using laptops particularly helpful https://youtu.be/PdX4qAd0nrs

Ultimately, as with any home update, it is about clearly defining the goals and objectives for your project. Often the solution is already there and by carefully measuring the area and assessing the requirements a space can be reconfigured to accommodate the new living requirements. Colour, soft furnishings and built in storage provide straightforward ways to metamorphosise an area.

Our styling and interior design service is available via video conference (or face to face as soon as we are allowed!) . We are now working on a number of styling cabin projects and would love to discuss your requirements with you.
